Lesbian-gay history exhibit opens in Columbus this week

by Bruce Mann

A traveling historical exhibition chronicling the nation's lesbian and gay community since 1967 will include Columbus as part of a second national tour in September.

"The Long Road to Freedom: The Advocate History of the Gay and Lesbian Movement" uses advertisements, cartoons, magazine covers, photographs and interviews to depict the events and personalities of the lesbian-gay civil rights movement since the Stonewall uprising in 1969. Many of these are drawn from the Advocate, a gay and lesbian news magazine which began publishing in California in 1967.

"The Advocate and

by his family after media disclosure of his homosexuality. Or Vietnam veteran Leonard Matlovich, whose headstone is inscribed:"They gave me a medal for killing two men, and a discharge for loving one."

Yarbrough said he was troubled when he saw the exhibit for the first time, witnessing how AIDS seemed to "materialize out of thin air,” taking away many of the magazine's best photographers and writers.

Also striking, Yarbrough said, was how "history has left us out as a movement. There's no mention in any of the history books of how the gay and lesbian community figured into any specific historical event." Stephen

"It's Gay and Lesbian 101 for those who don't know anything about the movement."

the lesbian and gay movement have moved hand in hand,” said editor-in-chief Jeff Yarbrough in a press release. "The exhibit will give people a sense of the community's rich and diverse history." Yarbrough resigned from the magazine in late August.

"The Long Road to Freedom”, based on a 400 page book by the same name, treats viewers to words and images that have become integral to the lives of the millions of American lesbians and gays: photographs of the Names Project AIDS quilt, reports on Pride marches across the country—including the marches on Washington in 1979, 1987, and 1993--and the anti-gay rhetoric of the religious right.

"This exhibit shows it speaks to everyone,” said Yarbrough. “It's Gay and Lesbian 101 for those who don't know anything about the movement. And people who are well versed discover bits and pieces of our history that they hadn't known before."

Also featured are the personal stories of those confronted with discrimination, violence or prejudice because of their sexual orientation.

These include ex-Marine Oliver Sipple who, after saving President Ford's life in a

1975 assassination attempt, was disowned

E.

Herbits, executive

vice president of Seagram's, one of the event's sponsors, considers "The Long Road to Freedom" important to his company's commitment to lesbians and gays.

"Stonewall was the first step for a minority that has been denied its civil rights. “The Long Road to Freedom' shows that Seagram is as concerned about the rights of gay and lesbian Americans as any other group that is seeking equal treatment," said Herbits, who is openly gay. Seagram's currently extends benefits to same-sex domestic partnerships.

The exhibition, which drew critical praise during its initial run in 1994-95, is currently touring nine U.S. cities. The tour's stop at Columbus will open at 1 pm September 5 and run until the 15th at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Cultural Arts Complex, 867 Mt. Vernon Ave. (Get off Interstate 71 at the Broad Street exit in downtown Columbus, take Broad St. two blocks east to Garfield Ave., and turn left onto Garfield. After four blocks, Garfield runs into the King complex's parking lot.)

"It's very important for us to recognize our history," said Kim Dill of Stonewall Union, which is co-sponsoring the event.”I think people should come out and celebrate who we were and how we got to where we are today."
